I'm a bit racist and....

How many times have we heard the clichéd phrase ‘I’m not racist but….’

It is only used by people who are blatantly racist and go on to make some crass generalization about a group of people who are a bit different to them.

I just want to remind myself what the term ‘racist’ actually means because it’s bandied about so liberally it’s true meaning has become obscured.

My simple definition would be judging someone on their genetic heritage, not their character.

We see someone with different skin colour, or different clothes, different beards and different outlooks and because we assume we are normal, then they are, by definition, a bit weird.

We all do it, it’s called being human.

Black people do it about white people, Asian people do it about Caucasian people and of course, white people do it about… just about everyone who isn’t white. And we have to acknowledge that when white people do it about anyone who isn't white, due to the power structures and history we live with, it has a bit of extra impact.

So, instead of saying, ‘I’m not racist but’ we should maybe modify the cliché to being, ‘I am a bit racist and’

As in, ‘I am a bit racist and I can see that it isn’t very helpful.’

‘I am a bit racist and I also accept that not every immigrant in the UK comes here to sponge of the state and get a free council house.’

‘I am a bit racist and I am trying to develop a wider view of humanity that doesn’t categorize people according to skin colour or culture, I fail at this every day but I can see the long term benefits of the internal struggle I’m putting myself through.’

If we all admitted to being a bit racist, when we read yet another pro UKIP headline in some tatty old right-wing rag screaming about immigration, we could see beyond the nationalist nonsense and question just how accurate the journalism is.

Here’s a clue.

It’s not very accurate.

It’s an opinion, an opinion from a racist who says ‘I’m not racist but.’

So lovely Mister Clarkson, who I genuinely feel sorry for at the moment, has made a bit of a boo-boo by reciting an old nursery rhyme from his childhood while on camera.

We are roughly the same age and I remember my grandma reciting the same lines to me over 45 years ago.

It’s a racist nursery rhyme, no question about it, my grandma was racist, pretty much everyone from her generation was.

I learned as a young man that using the offending word was wrong not because of the word, but because of the power relationships involved, the long and uncomfortable history white people of the UK have with Africans going back 100’s of years.

We can’t deny that history, we can’t make it go away simply by not saying a word.

We can only live with the fact that we are a bit racist but we’re trying not to be, which, to give Mister Clarkson his due, I believe he’s trying to do.

On the other hand, he did bloody say it, well he mumbled it.

He could have substituted the offending word with 'cyclist' or 'teacher' or 'social worker' or 'beardy weirdy environmentalist' or 'feminist' or any number of people he can't stand.

As Mister James May stated on Twitter, ‘what a bell end.’

"Darn tooting" ...(no, don't take it like that tooting)

As someone of a certain age (without clarkson's bubble perm I must add) ..I still lose rythm of this "simplistic" odd one out rhyme, because the "N" is so ingrained having picked it up from god knows where as a child, not my parents.

I tried it last night & still "stalled" having to break to consciously make it nipper, or tigger etc, ..so I can understand from one angle, but not from the other, clarkson has made a living from his mysogony, grumpy ole man, comedy et al, & I think it's come home to roost, for many years we haven't been able to see where boorish tv clarkson ends & real off telly clarkson begins.

We'll never know, just hope it means less of him visible in any shape or form in general.

thought he was a twat before this, no change there.

The power structures are an important human consideration, but that shouldn't be construed to mean it isn't wrong and harmful when a person who doesn't happen to be white makes a racist comment, or makes hiring decisions based on race, or, as I've personally experienced, grades along racial lines.

Before anyone has any delusions that it's "balancing" or "deserved": What happens when a member of a disadvantaged group discriminates against the descendent of a culture that is, as a whole struggling to end its long history of racism? It dulls the arguments of those fighting against racism, and it sharpens the teeth of those who are hanging tooth-and-nail to the old hatred. It doesn't say "we are equals", it says "we are enemies".

Spot on. I hear my kids say that rhyme and wince because I think they are going to say the n word (it's ingrained in my brain - i'm about 40). I'm no fan of Clarkson, although do watch TG. The furore over this smacks of a newspaper out to get him, pure and simple.

Honest question: why is it OK to replace the word with "teacher" but it's not OK to replace it with "hmm-hmm" as he did?

May 2, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterScott

I can honestly say I am not racist (there's no "but"). My ex-wife is black and my children are of mixed ethnicity. My girlfriend is Indian. Sure I could still be racist (but) I honestly have no negative feelings/thoughts towards anyone of a different colour or country.

Racism however is not to be mistaken for the dislike of someone for their religion. I really dislike Christians and Muslims. My parents are Christians and I detest them always saying "We'll pray for you" whenever there's a problem I am faced with (almost as if I can't get through the problem myself, but instead require some divine intervention!). Anyway, a person who dislikes Muslims sometimes gets called 'racist' but this is not correct because of obvious reasons. I learned the word 'Islamophobe' but apparently it is a weak description (puzzled).

I am an Islamophobe but I do not hate people who are Muslims. I just dislike their beliefs and what their beliefs can make them do.

In fact I believe religion to be a major problem for this world. I would say I am 'Theophobic' which is a fear of religion... I don't have a fear of religion itself, but I do fear what religion has caused people to do throughout history and to this day. I'm not entirely certain if there's a word for that type of fear.

So I'm not racist, but I don't like religion and to some ignorant and maybe slightly uneducated people, that makes me racist. But I am not ;-)

Orwell saw the writing on the wall. All thought crimes.
.
Only one sector in the UK are banned from living under the Human rights act - Freedom of thought and expression. And that sector is the Indigenous Joe public.
.
We are not allowed to use the four letter definition of Pakistani by sufferance of law, yet they can call us "Brit" because they know it's another political word. There is no "English" or true "Britons" any more. These ethnicities are BANNED! In defiance of the Human Rights Act, again.
.
We are not allowed to use any references of a persons origins. You know that country's name we now have to say in French "Niger". Yet the same black people can and do greet each other in the same name.
.
The fact of the matter is the law ONLY and decisively picks on the indigenous for crimes of "wacism". They who make and enforce the laws are in fact the worst bunch of racists de-facto. Not all people are equal in the eyes of the law and nobody is "innocent until proven guilty" now we are signed under EU law.
.
The same sort of idiocy happened to me when I was soaking wet, hands full and walked into a shopping arcade. I was told in no uncertain words by what I quite frankly call a jobsworth knobhead to take my motorbike helmet off - right next to two women wearing Bhurkas. I am a Briton. The new untermenshen. The unspeakable, the lowest of the low.
.
The new iron curtain has fallen on the people with the highest shoulders to weigh them down until they are forced into a bow.
.
Propaganda is perfected. The name "sheeple" is perfect and Fascism reigns supreme in all it's definitions across the West.
.
When anyone says to me "I'm not a racist but", I know they are about to tell a fact that cannot be denied.

@Andyj: I wrote a response to all your 'points', but then I decided to delete responses and just write this so I can point out that you sir are nuts.

May 9, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJon

@Jon.
Thank you for starting a slanging match.
You sir, in total denial of facts, so, de-facto a bigot.
I will uphold this view of you, as you do of me until you can genuinely PROVE you are correct.. and my personal experiences, a liar.

That would be tough.
I wrote a stinker to the Grand Arcade website in Wigan expressing my complete anger over their inability to use any intelligent reasoning and attitude. It should still be there.

If you are one of the uneducated sheep who only "thinks" he has any idea what Fascism is. A Left wing dream. Suggest you go look it up girlfriend.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fasces
The AXis power bundles sticks (other provinces) around it to make it unbreakable and ties them all with leather bindings (law).
etc.

How about the Napoleonic code.
http://www.napoleon-series.org/research/government/c_code.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Napoleonic_Code
One example of this is the ability to send someone for a re-trial regardless of the previous outcome. Or how the police have killed nigh on 2,500 people with NONE done for killing, (not even their own) since Labour signed us in 14 yr's ago. .. The lists of issues with this legal code go on.

Now you go find the lists of who has been committed, fined or warned about "wacism". Who is whining, who gets let off and who gets done. It's a racially targeted thought crime. Show me the IPCC court cases proving otherwise. You cannot.

My g/f is Lithuanian and her kids had similar with food and drink at her mums when we had a night out. I was well and truly confronted with racist epithets directed at me on arrival. Took me 30 seconds to verbally knock him down -

Me: You know that world famous Lithuanian inventor who run and owns that multi billion dollar industry which made Lithuania rich?
Q: "Who?"
Me: (In his face) EXACTLY!

Defines why he fills pies as cheap slave labour to offset the previously imported non-workers, the cash income only workers. Those who actually hate the UK big time and why I made more money than he will ever see.

@Andyj:

There was no intention of starting a slanging match, just stating the facts as I and many others in this 'herd' see it. I don't need to write out an essay to prove to you I am not a bigot or a liar, it's just obvious from your rantings that you're just a twat who calls other people 'bigots', 'liars' and 'sheep'. Something I've seen often with conspiracy theorists who share a similar trait with religious fanatics.

I certainly can't be bothered to read your random findings on the Internet, that you've pieced together to make a 'truth'. There's no conspiracy, there's no 'wacism' as you call it and the facts are still clear that you're an idiot and a nutter. Now I don't usually resort to name-calling, but sometimes I think the only way to get through to someone is to say it exactly like it is.

Bidding you a good day.

May 9, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJon

@Jon,
You started it because you are a nutter and a not very bright one at that who's trolling someone who see's, compiles, reads, verifies and never lets any fact go.
There is no conspiracy in telling the truth. However it only takes a one useful idiot without an ounce of proof to his belief set to start a slanging match.

That tosser is you, because you started it.

I'm really a nutter, yes undeniably... And oh yes I'm so unintelligent and quite obviously an idiot. This is evident in the incoherent ramblings I've posted. If only that were true and I wasn't in a highly paid job because of all the hard work and study (yes, actual qualifications) I have achieved during my life so far. I'm definitely a nutter though, but not of the insane quality you have shown with your extremely incoherent crap.

Using "you started it [...]" (twice) and changing your name to 'Andyj The troll hunter' makes you sound like an immature little twit. So now you're resorting to calling a person who won't believe your gathered 'facts' a troll. Does that make me Jon The Bigot Sheep Troll? Words that truly moronic people like to call others that aren't the stubborn conspiracy types.

Call me what you like, but from your comments anyone with any real intelligence, reasoning, or just plain old common sense would see you for what you are. I'll give you a clue; they won't see you as clever.

May 9, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJon

@Jon,
What intelligence? You haven't backed up one assertion yet!
The plain fact you cannot follow simple English is a testament of you.

Do I really need to back anything up? The only thing I asserted is that you are a total nutter who calls others uneducated/sheep/trolls/bigots because they won't believe the 'facts' you've gathered from around the web. And your own comments help prove that. So in a way you've helped back me up there, so I guess I owe you thanks. Well done!

My Englyish is terrible, sorry...

Again, if only that were true. I lost no points in assignments during Uni for my English writing skills.

Perhaps before criticising my English, maybe you should have a closer look at your own comments. I can tell you without any doubt that you'd lose marks in an assignment if you wrote like that.

May 9, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJon

@Jon,
Yes you do because you made a defamatory remark against my person. Which is illegal. It is an older law they based racism on. It is called Slander and libel.

Instead of offering your backside to the courts I slandered and libel you back.

As goes writing "in English". Once again, another racist epithet off you. There is no English, remember.

Defamatory remark? What, calling you a "twat"? I'm sorry but that's not illegal. Don't try to pretend you can take me to court for slander or libel for that. Idle threats from a truly twatty person. You really are quite humorous. If I met you outside and you sprouted this kind of shit in front of me I'd still call you a twat, and a right twat you are.

Let me educate you a little; slander is the oral defamation and libel is the written form of defamation. So what you want to attempt to take me to court for is libel, not slander. However please let me know what untruth I have published about you except for what can already be seen by others that you've already made quite clear? It is also evident that it is my opinion that you're a complete and total twat/nutter, so in the court of law you'd fail miserably. You might want to look up the definition of tort to help you out there.

English as a written and oral language, calling me racist for stating that? ... You truly are desperate.

May 9, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJon

However, if we were to meet and I called you a twat to your face then feel free to try and sue me for slander in that instance.

May 9, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJon

Also, libel or slander has to ruin a reputation, or cause loss of earnings or something to that effect. Calling you a "twat" is just stating what I see, in my opinion :)

May 9, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJon

So, you are also a violent twat. Is that why you are a far left self hating racist who cannot live with his own type. Possibly in fear an established Briton would report you to the police.

May 9, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterAndyj

Violent? What? I said I would call you a twat to your face, not beat the shit out of you. You're quite obviously ignorant and cannot face up to this. Keep the pathetic attempts for insults coming, they're not working. And as for left wing, self hating racist; sure, sure, that's why I detest UKIP, have an Indian girlfriend, black ex wife and mixed ethnicity children. I don't hate white people. Who said that? You're coming to your own deluded conclusions which really isn't surprising.

Am I afraid, do I sound like you who makes empty threats? I invite you to attempt to take me to court, they will laugh at you and then we can publicly name you as a twat and it won't be false because you would have completed the twat verifcation process (although in my opinion that's already set in stone).

Do you have Celtic roots? Nah probably not, but I do and that makes me more of an established 'Briton' than you boy. Fucking hate your type, your ignorant racist and almost fanatical views are not welcome here or anywhere for that matter.

May 9, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterJon

Rob, I do apologise if you're reading any of this and it's bombarding you with notifications.

I simply detest those who use the word "sheeple", or claim that they are true 'Britons'. Maybe a long long lesson in historical facts would enlighten them, but I doubt that. I just get a little tetchy when those who are a few lettuces short of an allotment think they no more than everyone else.

Again, I am sorry.
